THICK CLOUD ACROSS THE EASTERN PILBARA EXPECTED TO FINALLY PRODUCE RAIN OVERNIGHT

Computer models indicate the thick cloud which has been crossing the Pilbara all day is likely to finally produce some rain that makes it to the ground. Falls of up to 30mm are possible in the rainband. But before you Hedlanders jump for joy it's almost all going to fall east and north of you. And before you folks in Broome get all excited, it's almost all going to fall south of you. Just what we need... heaps of unseasonal rain falling in remote sections of coastline that will benefit ver...

INDONESIAN TROUGH AND LOW SENDS MOISTURE ACROSS AUSTRALIA

Isn't weather amazing? One strong area of convergence near Indonesia can funnel moisture thousands of kilometres along the jet stream all the way to the Coral Sea and beginning tomorrow with the assistance of the so called 'super dooper monster LOW' forming over Southern Australia, they can combine to help create massive unseasonal rains across Central and Southern Australia while indirectly assisting storm formation across Northern Australia too.  One system without the other mak...

OUT OF SEASON TROPICAL LOW FORMS NEAR INDONESIA

A Tropical LOW has formed near Indonesia's south-west coast and is set to drift south while slowly deepening. The LOW may move close to Christmas Island on Wednesday or Thursday and produce gusty winds and a period of heavy rain. If it was to do the unlikely and deepen significantly enough to become a Tropical Cyclone it will be Australia's first of 2016/2017. The Bureau of Meteorology is giving this system a 5% chance or less of doing that while computer models are slightly more hopeful at...

TROPICAL CYCLONE MEGI INTENSIFIES AND HEADS FOR TAIWAN

A Tropical Cyclone formed near Guam a couple of days ago and is now heading towards Taiwan. Tropical Cyclone Megi is a strong Category 2 on our scale and will intensify to at least Category 4 intensity (it might even make it to 5 if it slows down a little) by the time it approaches Taiwan on Tuesday. The system is moving steadily WNW at about 20km/hr and is a relatively large cyclone in diameter.  Taiwan was very lucky a couple of weeks ago when they missed the very tight and strong e...

STORMY THURSDAY COMING UP FOR EASTERN QUEENSLAND

STORMY THURSDAY COMING UP FOR EASTERN QUEENSLAND
Eastern Queensland's wait for storms is almost over. After enviously watching inland and southern areas of the state cop flooding rain, Eastern Queensland looks like it'll get in on the act on Thursday with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms across many areas associated with an Eastward moving surface trough and an Upper LOW across Southern Australia. Of course being showers and thunderstorms as opposed to general rain, the rainfall from these showers and storms will be hit and m...

TROPICAL CYCLONE MALAKAS SETS COURSE FOR JAPAN

Tropical Cyclone Malakas narrowly missed Taiwan to the east and has now set its sights for Southern Japan. The weakening Category 3 cyclone on the Australian scale passed a couple of hundred kilometres east of Taiwan yesterday. The system was much stronger yesterday and Taiwan dodged a bullet there after Severe Tropical Cyclone Meranti nudged the southern tip of the island as a Category 5 a few days ago. The cyclone is expected to approach Southern Japan on Tuesday morning Australian time. The s...

WEAK TROPICAL CYCLONE JULIA FORMS OFF THE USA EAST COAST

A very weak Tropical Cyclone has been named off the coast of the USA. Tropical Cyclone Julia was an area of strong storm activity over the Florida Peninsula for the last couple of days, before it surprisingly managed to pop off the coast overnight and intensify just enough to be a borderline tropical cyclone. The cyclone appears to have been smashed by wind shear, but the NHC is maintaining warnings and intensity of the system. The circulation centre is expected to be slow moving and the NHC ex...

MALAKAS FOLLOWS MERANTI

Tropical Cyclone Malakas ( my Greek friends will definitely have a chuckle at that name :p :p )  is gradually deepening east of the Philippines and tracking in a WNW direction. Malakas will move towards Taiwan over the coming days, but model guidance is split on whether the cyclone will nudge the island or track just to its east as Malakas changes direction and moves north in a few days time. In the meantime Malakas will gradually intensify and is expected to attain Category 4 or...
